Local SEO Checklist for Dudley Businesses in 2026

What actually moves the needle for a small or medium Dudley business trying to show up on Google, without the jargon or the padded agency retainer.

Start with your Google Business Profile, not your website

Most local businesses put all their SEO budget into the website and treat Google Business Profile as an afterthought. That is backwards for local search. Your profile is what actually shows up in the map pack, in Google Maps, and in the local pack results that most Dudley customers click first.

Make sure your category is set correctly (not just close enough), your opening hours are accurate including bank holidays, your service area matches where you actually work, and your description uses the terms customers search for rather than marketing language. Photos matter too. Profiles with recent, real photos of the business consistently outperform ones with none.

Fix the technical basics before you chase rankings

No amount of content will rank if the site itself has problems. Before writing a single blog post, check the fundamentals:

  • The site loads quickly on mobile, not just desktop
  • Every page has a unique title tag and meta description
  • There are no broken internal links or dead redirects
  • The site has an XML sitemap submitted to Search Console
  • HTTPS is enforced across every page

These are unglamorous fixes, but they are the difference between Google being able to crawl and trust your site, and it quietly ignoring pages it cannot make sense of.

Build pages for the areas you actually serve

A single homepage trying to rank for every service and every town rarely works. Search engines reward specificity. If you offer web design and SEO in Dudley, dedicated pages that speak directly to that, like our own Web Design Dudley and SEO Dudley pages, give Google a clear, specific page to match against a specific local search, rather than asking it to guess from a generic homepage.

The same logic applies to any business with more than one core service or more than one town it serves. Resist the urge to cram everything onto one page.

Reviews are a ranking signal, not just marketing

Review count, review recency and how you respond to reviews all feed into local ranking. A steady trickle of new reviews, replied to consistently and honestly, tells Google the business is active and trusted. A handful of old reviews with no responses tells it the opposite.

Ask happy customers directly, right after the job is done, rather than hoping people leave reviews unprompted. A short link sent by text or email after a positive interaction converts far better than a general request on an invoice.

Track leads and calls, not just traffic

Traffic is easy to report and easy to feel good about. It is also the wrong number to optimise for on its own. A page that gets fewer visits but more phone calls and form submissions is doing its job better than one with high traffic and no enquiries.

At minimum, track phone calls from the website, form submissions, and where each lead actually came from. Without that, it is impossible to tell whether an SEO campaign is working or just generating vanity numbers.
